17: Upstate (S→S-→A+)

Upstate in tier list

pretty much exactly my jam, I love love love this sound

EDIT: been thinking about it and if they release another album on par with Healing then that’s an easy S, but until then I think S- is truer

EDIT: did a relisten. off the cuff, I like Upstate’s first album a lot more than I remember. It’s not gonna be one of my favorites ever, it isn’t full of hit singles or whatever, but it’s solidly a ‘good album’. Not S range quality, for sure, but I don’t think it hurts their case as much as I’d made it out to in my head. Healing is so good, that much is true. One of my favorite albums of all time. And yeah, upon relisten of album three, You Only Get a Few, it’s still not my jam. It’s just not engaging to me, not my thang. Before that, I could justify the S- because I might like their third album as much as Healing, or at least close. But album three has come and I’ve sat on it for a bit and it just doesn’t do it for me. So all around I think I am gonna say, while I absolutely adore Healing, Upstate as a band does not fit in the S range. It can’t, I don’t trust them like that, they aren’t worth that to me. That one album is, and it does a lot for them, but all around they aren’t. I’ll hold out that kernel of hope that in a couple years they have an album that’s a return to everything I loved in Healing, but that’s a hope. It’s not actually how things are now. Sorry gang
