34: Alex Cameron (B-→C-→D-)

Alex Cameron in tier list

really good songs and songwriting, vulgar and on topics that I’m not sure how to fit in to my listening, or if I want to

EDIT1: upon my overhaul he fits better in the C-tier. Lots of stuff I want to like about him, but not enough that I actually do

RELISTEN1: first album I don’t care for at all, super weak. Second steps it up but it’s still not great, same with three and four. Production and songwriting I think he keeps getting better on as he goes, but it never gets to where I actually really like it very much. The music is fine, and that’s probably it, it’s fine. The lyrics range from provocative and interesting to provocative and distracting. Because sometimes they are just, super distracting and I do not like them.

When something shifts into being provocative for the sake of being provocative, of saying, “This is taboo to sing about and I think that’s dumb so im gonna sing about it so hard, just about it, just really push all the buttons. You’re the one who’s being dumb for wanting a standard, so I’m going to devote all my my artistic space to pushing back against that standard”, I lose interest. Like, yeah, you pushed all my buttons. Great, good job. I don’t wanna be around that, goodbye.

And maybe he’s not trying to push buttons, maybe this is just his interest and his focus, but even then I still am not a fan. The degree to which he constrains himself into only talking about the things he talks about is such that it feels like he’s a comic musician, but instead of comedy it’s these gritty harsh-reality stories. To compare within the artists I’ve ranked, it’s the same trap that Jazz Emu falls into. The commitment to just this one topic/style of lyric/story, the commitment to something so noncomformative, is distracting. At least with comedy musicians like Jazz Emu, sometimes I enjoy it, I think it’s funny and goofy and great, even if it can be distracting. But with Cameron, when I get over how distracting it is I just find I feel it’s unpleasant. I think there’s a lot about him I can respect, but very little for me to like. I don’t like him. Low D-
