A History

I’ve decided to make a post each time I update The List with a new artist. Nothing much, just artist, rank, and which number artist they are as I’ve ranked them, chronologically. This makes me feel like I’m doing more on this site, yes, but I think more importantly it gives me a record, a timeline, of my progress. So, going forward, I’ll have a good and accurate history, which is great.

However, everything before this post I filled in retroactively and is only so reliable. I believe it should be pretty accurate all the way back to #63, The Format. Almost certainly accurate with regards to sequence, and likely accurate within a day with regards to the exact date ranked. Before that, from #62 (Sting) all the way back to #1 (The Killers), the dates are only approximations at best, gathered from when I uploaded them from my personal notes to the site in great chunks. Even the sequence of these is uncertain. I think it’s possible the sequence is correct, and am even hopeful of it, but it is entirely possible and maybe even likely that it isn’t.

The other big caveat to this record is the date I originally started this project. I put it down, according to the publishing date on the Killers lil baby update post, as May 1st, 2021. This is just a guess, I have no way of knowing when I actually started. The note I keep on my phone is one I adapted from a previous list created years before, I didn’t start on this site until months into the project, and I didn’t keep a journal between March 2018 and April 2022. I can only guess. I remember doing half•alive on a warm summer night’s walk, and I remember doing Phoebe Bridgers similarly. I also remember doing Green Day and Matchbox Twenty while doing homework, and those were within that frame. I can only believe that (assuming the order I placed them in was accurate), I started around the early summer of 2021. Potentially as late as mid-May, potentially even as early as mid-April. May 1st is my compromise.

One final thing to note about this is that I do adjust artists’ rankings on a fairly regular basis. But I like being able to see the original ranking, to see what my first impression was. And, I also like seeing the movement, seeing everyone’s path. So I won’t be updating these to the artists current ranking instead of their original, but I will update their current ranking in addition. Ergo, (A→B) means the artist was originally ranked an A, and sometime later I bumped them down to a B. Pretty intuitive and keeps with all of my record keeping goals, I think.

So there you have it. Going forward, this will of course be updated live and thus be almost perfectly accurate, but I still value the prior records, even if they can only be trusted so far.

That’s all.
