A Revamp

I’ve overhauled my rankings from B- and below, for a couple reasons. I noticed how many artists were being funneled into B-, noticed how I still had never used the D or F tiers, noticed how I mostly avoided C tier. I’d been putting everybody I didn’t like into C-Tier, and if somebody didn’t offend me or have anything in particular that was against my sensibilities I’d plug them into the bottom of B. That was actually a huge issue, because having any one thing in particular against my sensibilities doesn’t really mean I don’t like an artist. More often, it’s the opposite: by and large, I like an artist a lot but there’s this one thing that bugs me. And importantly, an artist I like a lot with one thing that bugs me is an artist I like more than one I don’t really like but don’t have any specific issues with. I ended up with all these super meh artists I didn’t like placed in the low B- range, above all these really interesting artists I wanted to like (or maybe, liked the idea of) that I’d placed in the C-Tier.

Basically, the new system is this: S-Tier is artists I adore, that I love; A-Tier is artists that I really like; B-Tier is artists I mostly like; C-Tier is artists I want to like, artists that I recognize as cool despite not being personally attracted to their style; D-Tier is artists I don’t like, all of those artists that used to be really really weak B- people; F-Tier is artists I dislike.

This is just… it’s so much cleaner. It makes more sense, it’s easier to explain, it’s easier to justify my decisions, and it’s easier to make actually useful rankings. And, now, all the tiers will be in use.

I’m hoping this new set of categories will work well for a long while yet. Fingers crossed.
