125: The Smiths (F+→F)

The Smiths in tier list

the albums remind me a lot of Kaiser Chiefs, I don’t particularly like Kaiser Chiefs (and obviously it would be Kaiser Chiefs that remind me of The Smiths, technically, but I listened to Kaiser Chiefs first so that’s my reference). The singles I think are better, but my biggest issue that I just can’t get over is that I actively dislike Morrissey. Most of the songs I actually mostly like, they’re good enough, they’ve got potential. I think I might like Johnny Marr’s other stuff, y’know, I’ll investigate.

But I dislike Morrissey. I don’t like the sound of his voice, it’s really sonorous in a way that absolutely takes me away from the music, I dislike it. I don’t like his lyrics, I feel like they’re trying too hard to be clever and quirky and not just trying to be good. I don’t like his melodies. This is the big one, I just straight up think they’re mostly all bad. Super unengaging, not catchy not interesting not fun. Everything about him just feels off, feels like it’s designed to sound generally unappealing, I do not like it.

I am honestly a little bit baffled on how they are so big, so popular/well known/well regarded. Like, if they were just some indie thing nowadays I’d be like, “sure, not my jam but I can see how that would have a following on Spotify”, but no, people love them, they were mainstream. Like, what? It goes to show that a) I clearly do not have a very good sense of what people generally like, of what will be popular, and b) tastes and preferences are real. But yeah, Morrissey really just kills this for me, makes me very much not want to listen to the music

EDIT1: the shift from F+ to F is just to make room for Chris Brown, it just makes more sense to me this way
