154: Gorillaz (C+)

Gorillaz in tier list

I’m not sure what my expectations were, I’ve not listened to anything like this before. This meaning a virtual band, a fictional one at that. I dunno, it’s not even weird musically, I just didn’t know even if it would or wouldn’t be weird, it was entirely novel and foreign to me. And ultimately, I think, it’s just another band. Which, part of me is like, duh, but it’s not something I knew, it’s something I had to learn.

Anyway, pretty consistently I’m feeling mostly meh on these albums, but also pretty consistently I like them more the second time around. Like, C to B- on the album scale. B- is not a great end result but if that’s describing a reliable pattern of growth that will continue with further listens, I might end up liking all of it way more than I can know right now. Cracker Island is kinda great, I think, for sure my favorite album so good to end on a high note.

All around I think what I’m leaning toward is a high C+ that I’m very willing to move up to the A-range given sufficient cause (starting at a C+ because I just don’t enjoy it as much as I do most in the Bs). Reason being, I like the idea of them, there are a couple songs that slap, this last album is unreservedly good and enjoyable, and there’s also a buuuuunch of stuff throughout that just is not my jam, that I don’t care about. I predict that will change, but I can’t very well make my ranking of now based off a prediction of then, especially when I’m in the habit of going back and making adjustments anyway
