156: No Party for Cao Dong (草東沒有派對) (A)

No Party for Cao Dong (草東沒有派對) in tier list

kinda slaps, ngl. Both albums are pretty stellar all the way through. Definitely of a kind with other indie rock I do know, especially I think Lovejoy and bits of Backseat Lovers reminded themselves to me pretty strong. Except, this I think is of a distinctly higher quality than either of those. All around just really good, I’m a fan

RELISTEN1: The first album slaps. It slaps very hard. I think if I studied it enough to gain an appreciation for the lyrics I could like it even more pretty easily, it could move from ‘much beloved’ to ‘an all time favorite’. The second album also slaps, and I don’t even really think it’s any worse, but I just don’t really like it as well. I dunno. I liked them a lot more this official relisten, but I knew I would. Whenever they come up I’m hit with such a deep sense of satisfaction, such a deep awareness of quality. It’s so tight and well put together and the energy is so good and it just hits, man, it just hits. And yet, I don’t think I’m going to move them up the ranks. The artists who I have ranked above them are ranked that way for their own particular reasons, and I think at least for now I’ll continue to stand by those reasons. Until No Party for Cao Dong can beat them at their own game (which would be tough, because in the A+ and up range the game becomes a lot sentimental and personal, and that’s tough in a language I’m so poor at), or until Cao Dong develops their own game sufficient to be overwhelming in its own right, I think it’ll stay where it’s at.

What’s a better way to put this… I said I like them more this listen, but I don’t think that’s quite right. It’s not so much that like for them increased as it is that my like for them deepened. It set, it became solid. And I think I’m largely content with where it set into. I think a new album could do a lot, and I’m open to reevaluate then, but with what’s around I’m happy with the high A they’ve got
