158: Hormone Boys (A→A-)

Hormone Boys in tier list

really good, super solid. Songs on average are a little long (baseline 4 minutes) but they’re all engaging, they all hold my attention throughout. All very consistent, high quality, I enjoy it a lot. My only real complaint is that songs are so long, though it’s not that big a deal. Yes, songs trend a greater length than I’d prefer, but by and large I don’t think it detracts from the song here, I think it stays aware, for the most part. There weren’t really any particular standout songs. I guess that could be interpreted as just being consistent, but that’s not the feeling I got. I dunno. Besides, it doesn’t super matter what I say right now, it’s not really gonna be a worthwhile opinion for a while yet, I just don’t have the capacity to judge this very well yet. It’s new to me, with a short discography (which means less exposure at time of ranking), and in a language I don’t speak. For now I think I’m gonna put at a mid/high A, that should be good

RELISTEN1: the more I’ve been listening to Hormone Boys, especially next to other artists I’m more confident in my ranking of, the more certain I’ve been that I have them ranked too highly. Not that they’re bad by any means, and not that I don’t like them, because I do. I just think I needed to recalibrate a little bit.

The main thing that pushed me to this was that, in the first few seconds of a song starting to play, as I realized it was them I’d be mildly disappointed it wasn’t No Party for Cao Dong or Accusefive. Part of this is also because I think I rated Accusefive way too low— my next relisten is gonna be them, they’ve already grown on me massively. But part of it is also that I just don’t enjoy Hormone Boys as much as I thought I did. I definitely still like them a lot, but not enough to warrant a full A. An A- will fit much better, I think
