169: Edie Brickell & New Bohemians (B+)

Edie Brickell & New Bohemians in tier list

I think I like this quite a bit. First two albums definitely feel older, not in a bad way just that’s the vibe, you can hear it. They’re solid and I like ‘em, there are individual songs I definitely liked. For whatever reason though, I felt that something was missing, they didn’t totally catch me. Third album I liked a lot, it was 15 years later and I think it was a really natural and good evolution from the first two. Then album 4, 12 years later, I thought was fine, I can see where it’s coming from but I don’t think it was all there, didn’t dislike it but it was my least favorite. Album 5 I think is quite strong. The first half is great, I’m all there for it. Second half is decent but just not even on the same level. I actually think that was a pretty common theme with most of these albums, I’d like the first half, the first couple songs a lot and then gradually lose attention, it was a little too frontloaded. All around I’m feeling pretty good about ‘em, high B+

  1. This was a blast from my past! It was so fun to listen to their first two albums and still remember the words to just about every song. The album I enjoyed most, other than the first two, was number 5 – Hunter and the Dog Star. And just like Pod, especially the first half of the album. Each song had its own vibe and I found the lyrics interesting and sometimes quite insightful. I do enjoy this band. I’m not sure if it is more out of nostalgia, or genuine appreciation, but the listening was fun so I’ll give them a B-.
