176: Heavy MakeUp (C)

Heavy MakeUp in tier list

this marked the end of my Edie Brickell investigating. I thought it was interesting. I was so close to liking it so many times but I think I never quite did. Each song felt like it had huge potential, but then they never really moved anywhere. I kept expecting a beat drop, or another instrument to come in, or even just a catchy chorus, or something, and it never did. I think I really wanted it to be something it almost was, but something that it just wasn’t, and wasn’t really trying to be. Which is fine, it’s gonna be what it’s gonna be, but for me this time that’s gonna mean a C

  1. My first impression of Heavy Makeup was, oh, this is the music they play in those clothing stores I’m just not cool enough to be in. You know the kind – where you can buy a t-shirt for $75. yikes. As I kept listening I found myself thinking – if Edie Brickell had a daughter, this is what she would sound like. And then lo and behold! By Jenny’s Picnic (the 2nd to last track on the album) there was no denying it…this wasn’t just Edie’s would be daughter – this was Edie herself! At that moment I got all the feels for a songstress who was such a pillar during my college years and I was so excited to start the album again and listen with my Edie ears. I didn’t keep any songs for my playlist, but I do have a strong, happy nostalgic feelings for Edie and am super impressed when artists continue to explore and expand in their creations, which Edie for sure does here with Heavy Makeup. With that in mind I give Heavy Makeup my highest, non-playlist rating of C+.
