183: Conan Gray (A)

Conan Gray in tier list

I think I like it quite a bit. I was expecting something a lot more down. I was expecting angst, and I can’t say it’s not angsty, but it isn’t depressing— it’s fun, it’s very enjoyable pop music. I’m here for it, I’m in. The lyrics aren’t anything I’d call spectacular, but they don’t get in the way and I enjoy the music a lot. First EP and singles aren’t my favorite. Not at all bad, just mellow, don’t really catch my attention. The first album is good, I like almost all the way through. The second album is solid. Not hugely better than the first, not some big leap, but I think the first album is good, and I think the second album is a bit better. Overall he’s consistently good throughout, I think he’s getting better, and there are some standout songs. I give it an A

  1. Ooh Conan Gray. I had my thoughts about him before I listened and let’s just say I wasn’t excited. I had heard Maniac (which I liked) and Heather (which I didn’t) and was expecting his music to be so full of feels and torment and sadness – more on the Heather end of things. Just kind of dark and brooding and a little bit cheap? Is that the word I’m looking for? Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed all of his albums, especially the 2nd and I must say I’m super intrigued by the 3rd which only has 3 of the songs released at the time of my listening but doesn’t sound anything like the other two albums. So curious! I love it. His sound, his voice, his lyrics – all continue to evolve. I look forward to hearing more from Conan Gray. He’s intriguing. B+
