my impression of Payne is weak, both in that I feel his music is weak and that the impression is weak. Nothing about him felt noteworthy, nothing caught my ear. He wasn’t lyrically interesting, he wasn’t musically interesting. His LP reads as a collection of singles, and I don’t much care for it. He was one of the 1D boys with writing credits on the most songs, him and Horan. I think it’s fair to say he knows how to make a song, he knows how to follow steps. I don’t feel like he ever really moved beyond that, from imitation into creation. Worse, the sounds and artists he’s imitating aren’t themselves particularly interesting to me, it’s an imitation of something I didn’t care much about to begin with. I give it a D, I think it’s a regression from what did work in 1D

Erg. I mean there was nothing offensive about this music, it just wasn’t my vibe. I didn’t connect to the lyrics or the style. It sounded to me like a combo of hip hop and pop and boy band. Maybe it was because Liam couldn’t just settle on one and then do that one really well. He was mixy. So fine Liam, be that way. You get a C-.
