196: Feed Me Jack (A→A+)

Feed Me Jack in tier list

I like every single song, and most of them more than just a little bit. This came onto my radar via connection to Sven Gamsky- this was the band he was in before he went solo as Still Woozy. I don’t know that I have a ton to say, I just really like it. I’ve got no complaints, and I don’t want to have to try to make up some kind of music review about why I liked ‘em. I just did, I dunno. All the words I usually use to describe things I like apply; I think it’s interesting, engaging, pleasant, fun, it holds my attention, it’s my vibe, and so on and so forth. Not as much as Still Woozy, but I can definitely see hints of that, it’s not all that far behind. This definitely makes me like Gamsky more in general, gives me more context for Still Woozy. But I also really like it in its own right, I’ll have to look into the projects of the other Feed Me Jack members. But yeah, I like it a lot. It’s just fun, it’s just super enjoyable to listen to, I give it an A

RELISTEN1: part of me feels lazy for just moving this right above Bobbing’s new position. Like it’s a copout, like I’m putting related artists near each other because they’re related instead of doing the hard work of figuring out what I actually think is appropriate. But I don’t think that’s actually true, I think I’m doing my best and I think this is appropriate. I wasn’t actually planning on doing a relisten of Feed Me Jack, it wasn’t because I’d recently relistened to Bobbing. Feed Me Jack just happened to pop up in shuffle, and I had the itch to listen to more of it. And then they’ve only got so much music, it was pretty quick to just listen to all of it.

And, man, I really like them a lot. They do such interesting and lovely things with rhythm and structure and flow, they have a distinct feeling to their melody and harmony that’s pleasant and viscerally satisfying. I really, really like them. I like their songs, I like their feeling, I like their style. I’ve gone through some country artists; I’ve gone through some hip-hop artists; I’ve gone through some Chinese artists, and K-Pop, and upcoming J-Pop; also upcoming, I’m excited to go through some math rock artists. That’s been on my checklist for a long while now, and it’s largely inspired by my fascination with Feed Me Jack and just how much I’m drawn to them, and my understanding is that their sound would be considered math rock. That is to say, I’m trying to chase down their sound or something like it, I like it so much.

And that’s what the higher A ranks are about, right? That’s what I keep saying, that’s what I keep reminding myself to maintain my clarity and my focus with the rankings. The A ranks are about me thinking the music is good, yes, and they’re about me enjoying the music, yes, but they’re even more about how I feel about the artist. Is there something about the artist that I feel, that I can feel more than I can quite say? Feed Me Jack has that. I like the music and I enjoy it and I think it’s good, and I have the feeling that I like the band. And I happen to get that feeling from Feed Me Jack stronger than from Bobbing and weaker than from Jack White, so this is exactly appropriate. Convenient, but then hey, sometimes things are

  1. What a treat! I went into this listen knowing nothing about the band or Sven Gamsky and Still Woozy. My ears and mood just kept sparking as I listened. This music is interesting, fun and sometimes funny. It is jazzy, and then poppy, simple and then complex. It made my eyes open wider and wider and once I even laughed out loud. Thank you tunafruitsandwitch! How would I have ever found Feed Me Jack without you? They get an A!
