I like it! The songs go a little long, but for the most part it feels like that’s how just how long the songs are— I don’t too much feel like there’s excessive stretching out of the song. There’s a good variety between songs, the production is nice, each song feels deliberately put together. It’s a jam, I like it, I think they’re kinda great. I do think on average their songs are too long, it’s rare for them to have a song shorter than four minutes (which is too long), but I do like all their songs so I’m mostly chill with it. The bigger issue is that I have no emotional or lyrical connection to them, and it’s a difficult and lengthy process for me to develop that connection. That’s not their fault at all, that’s just the name of the game when I’m listening to music in a language I don’t speak, it’s kinda unavoidable. That said, I have liked all of their stuff more the second time around, so that’s pretty encouraging. I could see myself liking it a lot more with more listens, with some understanding of the words. So yeah, I like it. It’s fun, it’s consistent, it uses fun horns, it’s a good time. A-
RELISTEN1: man, I just really like it. It keeps growing on me, I like every song more and more the more I listen. I’m continuously excited when they come on. I like all of their albums as albums, I like almost every individual song considerably, there are loads of standout songs, and the vibes are just good overall. I really like ‘em.
My main issue with them on my first listen was that the songs are all too long— and it’s true that by my typical standard that aims for a three minute song, all the songs are too long. I can count on one hand the number of songs that are less than four minutes, and four of those are within 20 seconds of four minutes. There are loads of five and six minute songs, and so by that metric Accusefive is definitely losing points. Except, they aren’t, not really. That’s a rule of thumb, and I think it’s important, but I don’t think it’s worth holding myself captive to. I don’t get bored of these longer songs. I don’t feel like they repeat themselves needlessly. I don’t feel like they’re inefficient at communicating what they try to communicate. I feel like they’re thoughtful and mindful of being as long as they feel they need to be, and that length for this band happens to be longer than it is for other bands. That’s something that I’m predisposed against, that I have to be convinced of, and Accusefive convinced me.
So yeah, I’m a big fan. I’ve listened to them a lot in the last month or so, and I really do just like them a lot. Enough that, to some degree, I almost like them more than I like the music. Like, I love the music, the music’s great, but it’s gotten a hook in me in such a way that I like it more than I like it, you know? And really, that feeling is I think what the A+ and higher range is all about. The feeling of not only liking the music in my ears, not only liking the artist in my head, but liking them in my heart. That’s the feeling that triggers a real confidence in the upper ranks, and it’s why the cutoff from A to A+ is so steep— that feeling is hard to get.
But Accusefive got it. A+
