my first impression was generally positive, and but by the time I’d listened to the second album twice through I was pretty on board. The first album was a little repetitive and slow for my tastes, but I think I still appreciate and enjoy it for the most part, I’d still call it a good album. The second album, again, I liked a bunch, and the third album I liked pretty unreservedly from first blush, though that’s of course helped by being primed by her earlier stuff. Fourth album isn’t my fav, and neither are the singles or the ep, but I stand by the first three albums. And like, it’s not like the other stuff is at all bad, I just really like the first three albums. I think as it stands I’m gonna give an A-, but I’m super open to that going up in the future.
I’m increasingly a fan, I like it more the more I listen. I like the albums as albums, I like the majority of songs, and there are definitely a number of individual songs that stood out that I like a lot. There are songs and moments where I feel it gets a little dull or a little slow, but those are more rare than not. I felt that she usually did a really good job of keeping things interesting— if the main melody in the vocals was repetitive and slow, there would be more movement in the instrumentation, which was often rhythmically interesting enough to be really effective.
So yeah, I’m a fan. Good stuff
RELISTEN1: I think I generally liked it more this go around. The first album I liked less, but the rest successfully grew on me. And, importantly for me, the time between this and my first listen allowed me to learn to like a few songs in particular. Meaning, few songs really stood out to me on a first listen (as is common), but this go around there were songs I was excited for, songs that had made an impression on me. Even better than that, her fourth album that I originally didn’t like as much as her first three, on a revisit, is excellent. Seriously very good, I like it substantially more than the other three even.
All that, though, to not change her ranking at all. This felt less like a jump ahead and more like a confirmation of the things I was already pretty sure I liked. So, A- still, no change
