Wayne’s so Sad (傷心欲絕) in tier list
what was most interesting to me listening to these guys was just how much less I liked the eps than the albums. I could hear why I might like them from the eps, the sound didn’t change all that substantially from one to the other, but the eps just couldn’t hold their own. I just think that the shorter amount of the time wasn’t enough for them to do a very good job. Usually I’m an advocate for shorter songs, but that’s really just because usually people tend to go too long. In reality, I’m a pretty big fan of the 2:30-3:30 sweet spot (up to 4:00 is usually fine too). Shorter than that and I start to struggle to figure out what’s going on in a song, I struggle to feel the songs identity. There’s only really time for movement or for a core theme/phrase, not both, and I think a good song needs both.
Thankfully, Wayne’s so Sad kinda nailed it with their first two full length albums, so that was great. It made for a super satisfying tease and reveal. I don’t think they were anything crazy, nothing that blew my mind, but they were both solid all the way through. Checked pretty much all of the boxes that can be checked for if I’m satisfied by an album. The only thing they were missing was some sort of emotional or personal or lyrical connection, which for me is exceedingly rare to hit on without tons of repetitions.
Most recent album I thought was kinda weak. Not impressed. All around I probably liked the two albums I liked enough for some A-, but the eps and the album I didn’t like (especially since that album was the most recent) bummed me out enough that for now I’m gonna call it a B- instead
so close but in the end, so sad 😦
