first impression was mid, but I think they turned it around by the end. The first three albums, and the first especially, aren’t terribly strong. They sound like they’ve got a sound they’re going for and they end up just being a shadow of that sound, they’re lesser for it. For example, they use a lot of English in their first album which would be fine except for that the English lyrics are thoroughly unimpressive. I’ve heard worse English lyrics from native English speakers, it’s not anything embarrassing or terrible, I just find them bland and tasteless. It feels like they’re chasing after this image of rock and roll, in sound and in theme and in lyrics, and part of that means using the same language, and trying to use it the same way, and it feels so thoroughly cribbed. It feels too much like imitation and not enough like inspiration, to me. And it’s fine, the imitation is fun, it’s not bad listening, it just doesn’t leave me feeling any real pull to them.
Their second and third albums both show some steady improvement, which is nice, but nothing crazy. Their fourth album is a big jump forward, for me. It’s more poppy and just more tightly produced in general and I like it a good deal. I don’t think I’m gonna say it made me a believer, I don’t love them and the problems I have with them aren’t not problems after one good album, but I went from contemplating a D+ at the beginning to feeling satisfied with a B. Good save, TRASH
