224: LÜCY (A-)

LÜCY in tier list

I like it a lot, yeah. I dig the vibes, the album is pretty great. It’s very clean, very well put together. I think an interesting detail that stood out to me, that is interesting because it stood out to me, is pretty consistently a song would start and I’d think, “alright, this is fine, a little mellow/boring but I like it okay” and then by the end of the song it had either developed over time or hit a phase two where it just stepped it up and I was totally jamming. That’s great, but the part that’s really cool is that on my second listen through, that first more mellow part wasn’t boring anymore. It was a clean build, it was an important part of an arc that I just hadn’t been able to see clearly my first time around. Anyway, yeah, all that to say that I like it a lot. There’s only one album and a few singles, but I’m here for it. I’ll give it a low A right now— I do feel like I’m putting this above some people I don’t really feel like I should putting it above, but I’ve been meaning to do some relistens to clean up my As anyway, so this should work out

RELISTEN1: her first album is as good as I felt like it was the first time. I think, listening to her songs in isolation, I’d convinced myself that it wasn’t, but it is. I’d also convinced myself I must not have actually liked it that much because I don’t like her other stuff as much– when relistening to her singles it was clear that while I may like them pretty well, they’re very clearly, to me, a notch down compared to her first album. There are a handful of songs that stand out on their own (the first three, mostly), but especially as an album it’s just super solid. It fits together, has good flow, good vibes. I’m here for it.

Which makes the second album all that more of a bummer because then, after listening to the first album and reremembering that yes, I really do think it’s very good, I thought maybe I’d been too harsh on the second album, Dance On the Shoreline. But no, I think it’s just not as good. I gave it a 7.2/10 on its first listen, and I think I’d stick with that. It’s pretty decent, it’s got some pretty good songs, there’s nothing about it I really take issue with. It’s just… it’s got no oomph, it’s got no sauce. You gotta have some sauce.

Frankly I think even with just the first album the A was a big give. I can see how I got there (I did give the ranking before the second album came out) but I think it was more a hopeful ranking than an acknowledgement of where I actually felt she was at the moment. I think the first album is great, but I have no real emotional connection to it and I still don’t. And now that I’ve got this second album that I like decidedly less, it makes loads more sense to move LÜCY to an A-

LÜCY complete, now listening to: 頑童MJ116
