253: Sammy Rae & The Friends (A-)

Sammy Rae & The Friends in tier list

Well, this really isn’t a first impression. I first listened through all of Sammy Rae & The Friends’ music almost a full three years ago, at the behest of my little sister. I liked ‘em a lot, and they kept growing on me as I listened. I never gave them an official rank because I didn’t count them as an official listen, because they didn’t have a debut album. Part of me is starting to revisit that, but another part of me maintains that it’s fair. There are a lot of people out there with a Spotify account and a released song or two, and I’m not going to count all of them equally as musicians and artists. I don’t believe that’s something you can just decide, it’s something you have to do, it’s something you have to make.

Anyway. If I had ranked them then, I probably would’ve given an A- or an A. After some time had passed and some of their songs had really grown on me, I think there would’ve been a period of time in which I would’ve raised them as high as an A+. Then they released a full length album three months ago and I meant to relisten and officially rank them and I forgot. So, did it now. An A-, even a top A-, is a lower grade than I think I would have expected to give them, on first thought. But while I really like their first five song EP, and a couple other singles after that, there are a lot of songs I just think are alright. And I don’t love the album, which is the real bummer. If the bummer had matched up to what I consider their best stuff, I could’ve given an easy high A, maybe even an A+. But the album is disappointing for me. So, A-.

Honestly, I feel like all my As and A-s are getting to be kinda out of wack at this point. It makes sense– just those two ranks have almost 100 artists between them. It’s hard to keep track of anything to any semi reasonable degree. Sometimes I look at the list and think “Yeah, that’s fine, that’s right, that’s close enough”. Sometimes I like at it and I think, “Wow, this is tough, does that really go here? ‘Cause if that goes here, then maybe this should go there… unless, hmmm…” and everything starts to feel so muddy. Blegh. Anyway, I think top A- will work well enough for Sammy, at least for now. Everything is “at least for now” for pretty much ever, but eh. I try
