reminds me a lot of Jay Chou. Not totally, and I think it’s diverging more as I keep listening, as she kept making music, but the resemblance is definitely there pretty strong. I feel that way, at least, which is all that matters for me making this decision. I think it sounds pretty similar to Jay Chou, but I like Jay Chou more, so that’s my main reference. In defense of Punch, I’ve spent a lot more time listening to Jay Chou and have developed a relationship to his music that I haven’t had the chance to do yet with hers, so subject to change obviously, but I think a B somewhere below him is a good starting point.
Honestly, I think the thing Punch is most notable for here is that she has not released anything I would call an album. The closest she’s done is two 5-song, ~20 minute records which I like okay. Maybe if I really liked them and felt they were beautiful and cohesive pieces of art I would fight to call them albums, but I don’t think that. Partly because it’s hard to get that without knowing the language, and partly because I don’t particularly care for them. I like them well enough, they’re fine, but nothing that really stands out. But I went ahead and ranked her, counted her as a listen, anyway. I gathered up all her songs and split them up into sets of 15 songs and gave each set a day. Part of why I’m alright with this is that she’s still got enough content out for me to feel like I can get a grasp on her as an artist, even without an album. One short ep, or a couple singles, that’s not enough, I stand by that. But, this is like 60 songs, that’s plenty. And I’m also trying to chill out a little. If a rule is helpful, keep it, if it’s not, let it go.
Anyway. I like it fine enough, I’m not particularly attached. B works fine
