Social Distortion in tier list
I don’t care about it, I don’t know what else to say. It’s boring compositionally, it’s not mixed in a way that makes the sounds themselves interesting or appealing, I don’t like the style of singing (or the lead’s voice, frankly). There’s nothing wrong with any of it, but it feels like there’s nothing there for me, I don’t love it. The first four or five albums are grungier, and the last couple are poppier, I think is a good word for it. The vocal melodies became more melodic and had a more prominent role in the music. There was also a change in texture across the board toward a cleaner, poppier sound– less gravelly, less thick with grunge and static and, well, distortion. On the one hand, I found that generally more enjoyable than the early stuff because I didn’t like the singing or the texture much at all in the early stuff. On the other, the texture and un-melodic singing were kinda what the music was. They seemed like they were designed and desired, like they were very much the point and soul of the music. I didn’t like it, but without it I don’t know what the point of the music is or exactly what it’s trying to be. When it was grunge, I found it stale and uninteresting music that was also texturally unpleasant. When it was cleaner and more pop-oriented, I found it stale, uninteresting, and a little bit heartless– more listenable as a matter of preference, but more heartless, soulless. I guess they just can’t win with me. Whoops. Gonna have to give it a D-. I have nothing against them but I do not care for them really at all
