282: Troye Sivan (A-)

Troye Sivan in tier list

I feel that this had a very clear arc, a strong line of progression from “eh” to “oh yeah”. His early stuff, first eps and singles and Blue Neighbourhood, was all fine but I didn’t really care for it. Lyrics and emotion and stuff were there, but the songs shuttling that to me left me with much to be desired. Nothing wrong with it, it just felt stale– simple, but not simple and catchy, just simple. Didn’t hold my attention, but got me hopeful that later stuff would because it was well put together and I wanted to like him

Bloom was a step up, but not by a ton. It went from “lots of stuff I kinda wish I liked” to “lots of stuff I almost liked, and some stuff I did”. The main turnaround for me was the In A Dream EP. That was super solid, I liked it a fair bit. Then the most recent album, Something To Give Each Other, I thought was great. I didn’t much care for Got Me Started, but I really quite liked every other song, 8/10 album. It’s fun to listen to, it sits nicely in my ears. Like, production and texture is warm and just a little bit bubbly and it feels good, and it fits the lyrics nicely, really coherent as an album.

All taken together, I’m on board with Troye Sivan. I think I’d want one more album that I like at least as much as Something To Give Each Other to really cement the idea that that’s where he’s at as an artist now, that it’s not a fluke, but especially with In A Dream, I still feel pretty good about an A-
