286: ZUTOMAYO (A-)

ZUTOMAYO in tier list

it feels very J-Pop. Which makes sense, it is J-Pop. I think what I’m feeling is that I am not yet very good at listening to and discerning difference within J-Pop as a genre, so from what I can hear it sounds so on the nose. I don’t have a lot to compare it to; Kenshi Yonezu I think arguably has J-Pop roots but leaves the genre, and Dios, while it still has the trappings of J-Pop, in a lot of ways feels close to prog or math rock to me. LiSA feels super comparable in the sense that it too is like, “yes this sounds like J-Pop” and it’s hard to hear more than that sometimes. But ZUTOMAYO is way better than LiSA, in a way that feels very direct; they’re playing the same game, and ZUTOMAYO is playing it better.

So yeah, it’s good, I like it. I like J-Pop, it definitely has a particular sound that I think there’s maybe a lot of sameness in, but it’s a sound I enjoy and I think ZUTOMAYO does it well so I’m mostly just here for it. A pretty unstressful A- to give
