there’s a bit of an arc, here. First album gave me big Paramore vibes, particularly in bits of the vocals that sometimes sounded so much to me like bits of Hayley Williams. The comparison feels so accurate as to be unfortunate, actually, because I very easily prefer Paramore by a good chunk. Then again, Paramore took a good long while to really grow on me, so maybe this will too? I dunno. Possible, but I doubt it, I think, there’s something about it that feels not there, yet. If nothing else, at least this first album feels like a pretty decent version of something else that I like better. But also, I might be romanticizing Paramore; most of the stuff of theirs that I really like is in the later albums. I dunno, it’s hard to say.
That Hayley Williams sound mostly went away for me for the rest of the music, which I think was probably for the better. Felt like it came into its own a little bit more in albums two and three. Still not my favorite, but pretty solid.
The fourth album, EVERGREEN, slaps, I am a fan, I’m here for it, I listened to it a third time just ‘cause I was having a good time. It has so much energy and spunk, its pacing is super tight, and it just sounds good. I give it an 8.6/10 but I could see that going up pretty easy.
As far as an overall ranking, I think I’m still gonna keep it as an A-. I’d wanna see another album at the level of EVERGREEN to convince me that that’s her standard, that it wasn’t a fluke, that I can let how much I like that album have stronger weight on my overall feeling of PVRIS as an artist. Even without more albums of a kind, I do feel like the previous albums built up to the good one, the good one still makes sense in context. So, A-, I think that fits pretty nicely
PVRIS complete, now listening to: Spacey Jane
