316: Olivia Dean (A)

Olivia Dean in tier list

This is pretty much a homerun, I think. I enjoyed it very much very quickly, and I liked it more and more as I listened. The music was consistently extremely pleasant to listen to, with complexities introduced through texture and production that really vibes with me. I think the lyricism is great, and particularly I think it is pop-song great, love-song great. It’s relatable and emotionally real, it’s got good lines and turns of phrase, and it did that without ever feeling to me like it got in the way. The tendency was to stick to one punchy line, one punchy feeling, and keep the song around that, and I loved it. It kept it closer to being poetic and gestural than descriptive, which is sometimes strongly my preference and sometimes strongly not, but that I think was super effective here.

Anyway, good stuff. I ended up really really liking both albums, and a good chunk of the singles and eps, too. I listened to Messy four times and The Art of Loving three, just because they’re so quick and I was enjoying them so much. Easy A
