The Mitchell Trio in tier list
I don’t really like them, per se. I think they’re fine to listen to; generally enjoyable enough, if a little bland. From just that perspective, I think they’d probably be a high D+. However, that’s not all they are; it’s not even really mostly what they are. They are satirists, and their music is meant to do work. Sometimes this is by being very very goofy, but I think that’s an important part of making commentary, of being critical. Critique is worth nothing without attention, and I think the ways they get attention are pretty good. Charming, even. And I always think earnest critique, even earnest mockery, is important. People do bad things when they take themselves too seriously, I think. People do bad things when they think they aren’t and can’t be wrong, and everybody can be and is wrong.
So, The Mitchell Trio has a specific function that I think it fulfills pretty well. They don’t make my favorite music to listen to, but I think the work they’re doing is pretty much always valuable. I wish they had more songs I liked, or that they had songs that I both enjoyed listening to and resonated with on a content level, but they didn’t, really. So, a C-.
