They were an opener when I saw 253: Sammy Rae & The Friends (A-) in concert… what, three and a half years ago, now? Dang. Anyway, I liked them enough to put them on my list, then I mostly forgot about them since they didn’t have enough songs released for me to really consider them for an official listen. Even now, they don’t have what I’d call a “full length” album, but I think maybe I’m ready to start being a little bit more flexible on that. They’ve got a couple of EPs that I could plausibly call albums for my purposes, but more than that they’ve got about 30 songs released (that I could see, maybe I’m wrong) and I think that’s enough for me to get a sense of them and feel like I can judge them a little bit as an artist.
And, I’m a fan. I dig it a lot. I liked them pretty immediately, and then I liked the next song, and the next, and so on. I liked every single song. I could turn them on and just jam out without worrying about running into something that I think will miss. I don’t know how much depth is available to be discovered and explored here, but I guess we’ll see. I just know that on a first blush, Yam Haus was so extremely likeable and enjoyable, really really great.
I’m giving them a solid A- without hesitation. I don’t think I have much of note to say about them other than I like them, but they are a little bit of note to me for two different reasons. Reason one is that they’re the first of a couple other artists I first encountered as openers who I’m going to listen to in the next couple weeks. Reason two is that they mark, to me, a willingness to play a little faster and looser in who I count as a qualifying artist for me to give an official listen to, what with the lack of what would be a satisfying album to me. Now that I’ve broken that wall here, I’m probably gonna go through and give rankings to a small handful of artists that I’ve previously listened to all of but not counted because despite having a sizable pile of songs, they don’t have anything that I’d call an album, any larger and more unified body of work. I’m thinking Bill Wertz, Jamie Miller, maybe a couple others I’m spacing on right now. We’ll see.
Anyway, yay, easy A-. Yay for Yam Haus.
