I think this is very good, this is pretty up my alley. I found myself immediately drawn to the energy of it: there is an intimacy and sincerity to it that manages to seep into the feeling of the music instead of just staying stuck in the lyrics. I think that feeling is best captured in Sleepyhead. There was a definite feeling of the first couple albums being rough around the edges—in some ways that adds to the type of charm that is strong here, but I think sometimes it also distracted and got in the way. Sleepyhead was the first album that I felt kept the full strength of that intimate feeling while also being polished and produced to sound good and not get in the way of the vibes. It felt like the album that the first three albums had been building to, and I liked it a lot.
Worm Food and Running With Scissors are both much higher energy, much less mellow, but I think they’re probably as well or better put together. And, even though they are higher energy, even though they work more at being catchy and engaging and fun, I think they still keep the sincerity of the earlier stuff that was so immediately compelling to me. Running With Scissors in particular I think was good, that’s a good album.
So yeah, really good stuff. The style is my jam, the feelings hit me, and the themes resonate with me. I’ve become attached, easy high A-.
