368: Car Bomb (D-)

Car Bomb in tier list

I think this is ranking is harsh, but I just did not care for it. To be honest, in some ways I think an F+ would fit my experience of Car Bomb better, but that just feels way too harsh. It’s not bad, but it got lost between my ears. I had a hard time holding onto it and actually remembering what I’d just heard, even right after listening to a song and trying to pay attention. Perhaps most importantly, I didn’t enjoy it, at all.

I feel like I can recognize what is supposed to be enjoyable and engaging about it: it is heavily rhythmic and there is a lot of complexity and depth to find there; it is emotional and strong-willed, and there’s certainly something to that; it is, I think, technically and/or athletically impressive music, and I can see that being an attractive factor. But, like, it’s just not fun to listen to.

I pretty consistently have a hard time enjoying music that I feel is harmonically or melodically lacking, even if the rhythm is there, and that happened here for sure. I don’t even need it to be harmonically or melodically complex, I just need something there. It can be boring if there’s still something that fills the spot that sounds pretty good, but I felt like not even that was here. All the harmonic and melodic information felt buried and deemphasized, and the stuff that was left was usually designed to evoke an effect or response that was rarely to sound nice. I have a hard time with that.

So, the D-. Sorry.
