Sarah and the Sundays in tier list
These guys had me constantly playing the “who does this sound like” game with myself. I kept feeling like there was someone they sounded so much like and I just could never place it. Their first album reminded me of Ivers, and also someone else I couldn’t get a name for. The second album reminded me more of… I want to say Wallows, maybe, but again, I don’t know. The third album reminded me of The Backseat Lovers, particularly their album Waiting to Spill, but better. Really, none of those are quite right—in that way, they feel most to me like Run River North for how familiar they sound despite me not having heard them before and them not really sounding like anything specific that I already know. In that sense, maybe all I’m hearing is that they just feel very much like indie rock? Like, the music has that feeling and maybe that’s all I’m hearing, is a sound of the genre, of the movement, of the times.
In any case, I like it quite a bit. I listened to the third album a third time, and I listened to the second album a third and a fourth time, and almost a fifth time after that. It was easy to listen to, and it just kept growing on me. It’s not so much that I wanted more—rather, I wanted it to be more, and I knew if I gave it a chance it probably would be. Or maybe I was just in the mood? Bit of both, I’m sure.
The point is that I liked Sarah and the Sundays decently well on first blush, I kept liking them more as I listened, and I’m sure that I’ll continue to like them more as I continue to listen. I’m not happy with my A- placement because it stoked my deep satisfaction with the state of all of my rankings, but other than that I feel like it makes pretty decent sense. I’d been thinking I’d give Sarah and the Sundays a low A (instead of an A-) until I was face to face with all the artists I have come to love who still sit in the A- range, but I think the A- is still appropriate.
I’ll also say that there was an added element of fun for me in this listen because it’s the first artist I’ve had recommended to me by a stranger through the blog. Which, that’s kinda neat, y’know? I dunno. Shoutout Joey, thanks for the rec. Enjoyed it a lot. Maybe check out Ivers, Wallows, Backseat Lovers, or Run River North, I guess.
