332: Rooftops (A-)

Rooftops in tier list

There’s just the one album, A Forest of Polarity. I listened to it four times; it’s pretty short and it’s the only album, so I figured I might as well. It sounds like math rock, I think, it fits the feel. A little bit, I don’t have much more to say about it than that.

I like it well enough. At this point I feel pretty confident in being able to say that I like the genre, that I like the tropes and the general feel of it. That said, I didn’t feel like this one really stood out all that much. It’s good, for sure, and I imagine I’ll come to appreciate it over time, but nothing about it really stood out. Specifically, there were no individual tracks or songs that really hit me, and I feel like with the math rock that I’ve really liked in the past there have been individual songs, or even just individual riffs, that really hit me. So having that missing did feel like a lack.

Which, again, does not mean I didn’t like it. I like it quite a bit. I’m not saying that I didn’t like it so much as I’m observing the interesting trajectory of my listening experience that comes as I familiarize myself with a style of music. My appreciation of the novel goes down at the same time that my appreciation of the familiar goes up. Or put another way, my ability to properly appreciate and recognize the intricacies of the novel goes up alongside my weariness with the familiar. They kinda balance out, but not quite. I dunno.

Point is, I like this and think it’s quite good, even though it didn’t stand out. Low A- seems appropriate.

Rooftops complete, now listening to: Magdalena Bay
